She was a teenager with a newborn. The thing that sent her to Vista Maria was falling asleep while she held the baby.
She was trying to keep the infant safe from lice. That is the account on More Than Just Luck. Protection was treated as the offense. The episode is titled Her crime? Protecting her newborn. Inside the Dearborn Heights facility, she describes inappropriate touching and being denied access to a bathroom. She endured it, she says, because she was fighting for custody of her child.

The custody fight is the reason the episode does not read as a simple story of punishment. She had a baby. The system had taken the frame of her life and called the mother's exhaustion a reason to remove her. Then, in the place that was supposed to straighten her out, she says staff touched her inappropriately and withheld the bathroom. She stayed through it because leaving the fight would have meant leaving the child.
Greg Wier hosts the hour as part of Voices Unmuted. He is the author of More Than Just Luck, and the series keeps returning to the same institutional habit: a girl arrives with a reason that should have produced care, and the building produces control instead. A teen mother falling asleep on her own baby is not a crime. The episode asks the listener to sit with the fact that it was treated like one.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
She does not put a performance on the survival. She says she put up with the facility so she could keep fighting for her child. That is the whole motive, and it is enough.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. A teen mom was sent away for protecting her baby is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
