Alyssa on leaving Vista Maria and finding a voice

bNXSTemudzw

Alyssa's episode is about getting out of Vista Maria, and then finding a voice the institution had no use for.

She was a resident of the Dearborn Heights facility. On More Than Just Luck, hosted by Greg Wier, she talks about survival and about what she calls systemic betrayal. The episode carries a warning for discussions of sexual assault and institutional neglect. The published description does not turn that warning into a scene to be retold. It identifies why she is on the microphone: she got out, and she is willing to say the failure was not an accident in a hallway.

Alyssa, a former resident of Vista Maria, bravely shares her story of survival and systemic betrayal.

Betrayal is the word she keeps. Neglect can be framed as a shortage, a missed shift, a budget. Betrayal means the people who had the job of caring for her used the job for something else, or stood still while it happened. Alyssa's account sits in that second meaning. The finding-her-voice half of the title is the part that happens after the building. The institution, in her telling, did not want the voice. She built it anyway.

Greg Wier, author of More Than Just Luck, has made a series out of that second half. Former residents come on Voices Unmuted and put language on years that were supposed to stay in a file. Alyssa's episode is one of those hours. It is about the leaving, and about what she says the leaving cost.

A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.

She is not asking to be described as resilient and then left alone. She is describing a system that failed her, and a voice she had to find after it did.

Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Alyssa on leaving Vista Maria and finding a voice is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
