Amiyah says she was abandoned at 10. Then, she says, she was drugged, abused, and starved.
On More Than Just Luck, she tells Greg Wier that getting pregnant at 15 looked, to her, like the only way out. The episode is called Escape Plan: Get Pregnant. The title is her logic at the time, not a slogan added later. She was a child who had already been pushed to a limit, and she treated a pregnancy as an exit.
She was pushed to her limits, and thought getting pregnant at 15 might be her only way out.

The story does not stop at the pregnancy. Amiyah talks about battling for the right to raise her child, about finding her way after what she describes as a decade of abuse, and about doing her part so girls in the same position do not have to invent an escape. A decade is a long time to be a child inside a system that was supposed to be the adult.
Greg Wier hosts the episode the way he hosts the rest of Voices Unmuted. He does not translate her plan into something more comfortable. If the only door a 15-year-old can see is a pregnancy, the failure happened before the pregnancy. It happened at 10, when she says she was abandoned, and in the years of drugs, abuse, and hunger she says followed.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
Amiyah is explicit about the point of telling it. She wants the next girl to have a real way out. Not a pregnancy used as a key. Not another building that calls starvation and drugs a treatment plan.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Amiyah says pregnancy looked like the only way out is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
