Ashly describes fear, isolation, and paperwork that made exploitation look like procedure.
On More Than Just Luck, Greg Wier interviews her about Vista Maria. The episode introduces her account under the name Ashley Bell and describes trauma she says she and other girls endured. An adult in a position of authority, she says, manipulated and exploited them. The title is the method: they used fear, control, and manipulation. She is specific about how coercion felt from the girl's side of the desk.

Paperwork is the detail that keeps the story from being dismissed as a mood. If the fear is written up as a treatment plan, the exploitation can be filed as compliance. Ashly's account is about that translation. Isolation made the girl available. Control made refusal expensive. Manipulation made the expensive thing feel like her own decision. An adult with authority supplied all three.
Greg Wier, author of More Than Just Luck, has heard versions of this from more than one former resident. Voices Unmuted exists so the versions stay attached to a name, a facility, and a method, instead of dissolving into a general complaint about group homes. Ashly's method is the title. She is not speaking in abstractions. She is describing how the building taught girls to confuse coercion with care.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
She was a girl inside Vista Maria. The episode is what she says the adults did with that fact, and how the file made it look routine.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Ashly on fear, control, and manipulation at Vista Maria is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
