Cherise needed an official signature to replace shoes that had holes in them.
Before Vista Maria, she says, there was foster care that was not safety. She describes abuse from foster siblings, and a caseworker who moved her from home to home and wrote nothing down. Not a single incident, in her account, made it into a report. When she was placed at the Dearborn Heights facility, she thought it was finally a fresh start. It felt like a prison.
Imagine needing an official signature just to get shoes without holes.

The shoes are the detail that makes the control visible. A child with holes in her shoes is a maintenance problem with one obvious fix. Requiring a signature turns the fix into permission. Cherise's episode, on More Than Just Luck with Greg Wier, uses that permission as the picture of the whole placement. She had already been bounced by a caseworker who did not document the homes. Then she was sent to a facility that documented the wrong things and withheld a pair of shoes.
The fresh start is a sentence institutions like. Cherise is specific about how it landed. The building did not feel like the end of the foster-sibling abuse or the end of the unreported moves. It felt like a locked version of the same neglect, with a form between her and a basic thing.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
She is not asking for a metaphor. She is saying a girl needed an adult's signature to stop walking around with holes in her shoes, and that the adults who had already failed to write reports were suddenly willing to write that.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Cherise needed a signature for shoes without holes is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
