Michelle left an abusive home for a place that was supposed to be the safe one. Vista Maria was not that place.
On More Than Just Luck, she tells Greg Wier what the transfer actually delivered. She describes assault under the facility's care, and chemical restraints heavy enough to erase whole days. The episode is titled Out of the Frying Pan. The proverb is usually a warning about jumping. In Michelle's account, she did not jump. She was moved, from a traumatic home into an institution that called itself the alternative.
Out of the frying pan: from a traumatic home to an institutional nightmare.

Chemical restraint is a clinical term for a drug used to make a person manageable. Michelle describes the dose as something that removed the day, not something that treated an illness she had named. Assault under care is the other half. The staff who were supposed to be the protection are, in her account, the setting where the assault happened. Leaving the abusive home did not retire the danger. It changed the letterhead.
Greg Wier, author of More Than Just Luck, hosts the episode as part of Voices Unmuted. The series keeps meeting women who were promised that the facility would be the interruption of the abuse, and who say the facility continued it with better paperwork. Michelle is specific about the two tools: assault, and a restraint that wiped the hours she would have needed to report it.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
She had already survived a home. The episode is her account of the building that was assigned to be the improvement, and was not.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Michelle left an abusive home for a place that was not safe is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
