Nikki on the help that never arrived

mlWb5VsRPbs

This is part two with Nikki. She arrived at Vista Maria unsteady, and hoping the building would be care.

On More Than Just Luck, she tells Greg Wier that the care became something else. She alleges medication she came to depend on, and physical abuse by staff at the moment she needed protection. The episode title is her conclusion: Vista Maria failed her when she desperately needed help. She had entered with an already unstable life. She was asking for guidance and protection. She says she did not get them.

Part two matters because part one had already described the place that was supposed to be safe. This hour is the failure in practice. Medication that creates dependence is not the same thing as medicine a patient understands and can refuse. Physical abuse by staff is not a restraint policy. Nikki's account holds both, and she holds them against the hope she walked in with. The instability was the reason she was there. It was not a reason to drug her into dependence or to hurt her when she asked for help.

Greg Wier lets the sequence stay in that order. Voices Unmuted is a series of former residents comparing the brochure with the floor. Nikki is one of the guests who came back for a second episode, which is its own kind of evidence. The first hour was not enough to say how the help failed.

A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.

She is not describing a misunderstanding about her treatment plan. She is describing a facility that met a girl in crisis with dependence and force.

Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Nikki on the help that never arrived is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
