Sophia was removed from her grandmother's home. Foster care did not steady her. She ran, and the next stop was Vista Maria.
On More Than Just Luck, she tells Greg Wier how her mental health collapsed in the foster homes, and how the trauma escalated after she was sent to the Dearborn Heights facility. The episode asks the question in the title: what's worse than foster care? Her account answers with Vista Maria, including what she says followed a suicide threat. The episode advises discretion. It does not need a second narrator to stage that threat. Sophia is the one who carried it.

Removal from a grandmother is already a loss. Foster care was supposed to be the replacement for that loss, a set of homes that would hold a girl whose first home had been judged unfit. Sophia says the homes did not hold her. Her mental health collapsed. Running was the result, and running delivered her to a facility. The escalation she describes is the answer to the title. The next place was worse.
Greg Wier hosts the hour inside Voices Unmuted. He is the author of More Than Just Luck. The series has heard a lot of girls describe a chain of placements that was supposed to improve at each link. Sophia's chain runs from her grandmother, through foster care, to Vista Maria. She is clear about which link did the most damage, and about the suicide threat that sits inside that link.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
She is not comparing scars for sport. She is saying the system had a worse room behind the room it had already called help, and that she was sent there after she ran.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Sophia on what was worse than foster care is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
